Love and History Collide in the Assurance of Liberty

Colombia is a lot more than cartels and cocaine. In my Belle of Colombia Series, I allow readers to connect to the thoughts, feelings and desires of two young people caught in the midst of Spanish control and a desire to be free as history and romance collide. The fight for Colombia's independence is paralleled by the love and dream shared by Maribel and Santiago.

In Book One, The Birth of a Dream, the two meet as Santiago is leading a group of youth out of Zipaquira, Maribel's hometown. The fight for independence from Spain goes very badly. Maribel and Santiago feel the pain of the possibility that their dream of starting a home and a family will never come to be. Within the struggle for independence are internal struggles of the two lovers as hope is the only thing for them to grasp onto.

In Book Two, The Desperation of Liberty, as Maribel and Santiago begin to build their home, the call for independence is still too strong for Santiago to ignore. Santiago rejoins the army in Venezuela and is part of a grueling 21 day march that crosses swamps, scorching plains and an icy alpine pass that threatens to wipe them out. Maribel has her own struggles with a toddler and another on the way back home.

Book Three, The Assurance of Liberty, places Santiago closer to home as he commands a unit of hunters in the mountains of Antioquia who are sent to drive out the remnants of the Spanish army. With all seeming to be coming together, a wicked man from her past shows up and threatens to destroy all that they've worked for. With Santiago away with the army, her only help comes from a man who had sacrificed his family and his home to fight for independence. Though he swore himself to live a peaceful life, he's forced to ride once more to save Maribel.

A tale that weaves through history and gives readers glimpses of the metaphysical that can induce deep pondering about life and its meaning, MacGregor's Wolf is a fascinating story that grips a reader's attention from beginning to end. Bil Howard's knowledge of history is evident in the detailed scenarios his protagonist finds himself in. He accurately captures the tone of each era, and provides enough details to make each adventure truly realistic. His writing hypnotizes the reader, and successfully induces feelings of melancholy, desperation, and eventually hope. The various twists and turns that the novel takes are all diverse enough to be interesting, yet interconnected in such a way that the reader grows with the protagonist. MacGregor's Wolf: Lessons of Time by Bil Howard is an amazing journey through fascinating periods in history where the main character, Ray Barrett, accompanied by a wolf, experiences strange lands and time travel. There is intense action where vivid dreams and reality collide. At the beginning of the story, Ray rides a horse through the beautiful mountains in the typical silent cowboy way. You can feel the earthiness, solitude and slow pace. Then at camp things drastically change. The rest of the 24 chapters tell tales of Scotland, Montana, Columbia, Egypt, Greece, the Mediterranean Sea, warring clans, Indian attacks, Christian crusades, Spartans, Israeli jets, King Richard, ghouls, Russians and Germans, the Golden Gate Bridge and a black horse with a demonic voice. To say there is a lot going on is an understatement.

It is clear to see that Bil Howard’s love of historical fiction and the wide outdoors is evident in his writing style. Each lyrical step and detailed adventure of Ray is chronicled in a well-composed plot, which attests to the abilities of the author. You will want to follow each moment of Ray’s confusion as he tries to piece together the facts with the help of a spirit companion. The dimensions fold and twist in each page-turning vision of literary excellence.
